First Day Of School!!!

The kids had their first day of school in Costa Rica and all went really great. Rachel's new friend Gabbi was at the gate waiting for us when we got there, so that made Rachel forget about us pretty quick, and Nathan was whisked off to his class as well. He had met another kid that can speak English named Wyatt when we came to register them a few days ago, and so he felt a whole lot better about school as well.

We picked them up at the end of the day and they both said that they liked thier first day. They didn't understand all of the Spanish instructions, but it didn't seem to phase them much.

I know this is going to come off as the Proud Papa talking, but I have been very impressed with my kids this week (except for the odd fight here and there - guess that's to be expected when we all live together in a one-roomed cabin.) They have been completely willing to try any of the new foods we have been tossing at them, have not complained too much about being dragged around to lawyers office, viewing of houses to rent etc. They handled the flight delays and long, boring periods waiting in airports with less complaining than their Mom and Dad. They have had their moments, but all in all, they have been great.

The First Week!

So OK, nothing really interesting has happened yet, but I'm gonna write anyway.

We arrived with no real issues, so those of you who had me crashing and burning even before we got here, nyah, nyah!

It's been a busy week... I haven't had a chance to have a single siesta yet... That better change!

Anyway, we got a car and successfully negotiated the legal system to have it transfered into our name. Plus, we got the kids enrolled into the school they wanted to get into, (they have already made some friends), and they start school on Monday, the 31st. We bought them their school uniforms - 6 tops and 2 skirts cost us just under $60 Canadian. I still say all schools should have them.

The application form was in Spanish, and I tried to answer in my questionable Spanish, so I expect some the answers will have them laughing in the back office for a bit. For example, one of the questions about the kids was translated to us as "How was the birth?". I don't know how to answer that one in English!

The answer to the question "What is your address?" was also somewhat embarassing, in that the answer was "Well, we don't have one yet!". Still, nobody even raised an eyebrow. In Canada, I'm sure they would have reported us to social services as poor homeless people. Gotta love laid back Costa Rica.

One week to go...

OK, everybody has been asking if we are going to have a blog or anything to follow our (mis) adventures down in Costa Rica. So, not really knowing the first thing about blogging, here goes...

We have just 5 days left till we take off, and besides trying to fit a years worth of stuff into one suitcase each, all of the hard stuff is done. The house is sold, the stuff in storage, and I'm not due back in the office untill August of 2010... but I'm afraid that I've been too busy getting ready for the trip to really let all that sink in yet.

I guess my hope is once we are settled, we have enough interesting things happen that it will be worth writing about them.

In the meantime... I gotta go pack!
